The Sole “Square Sea” Wonder in Taiwan: A Matsu Marvel

There are only two places on Earth where the sea appears as a series of striking square grids, a phenomenon known as “square sea.” One is on the French island of Île de Ré, often hailed as “God’s masterpiece.” The other, a lesser-known treasure, lies between Xijukunqiū Beach and She Island in Juguang Township, Matsu. This unique visual effect is created by the seabed’s topography and the interaction of currents, causing waves from different directions to converge and divide the shallow beach surface into distinctive square-shaped patterns. The spectacle is most pronounced during high tide. In recent years, photographers have documented the breathtaking sight of bioluminescence, appearing as shimmering blue lights carried by the tide, creating a truly magical jewel-toned square sea. And the golden square sea shimmering under the warm glow of an orange-red sunset is simply unforgettable!

For the best views of the square sea, vantage points from the pavilion overlooking Kunkunqiū Beach or nearby elevated slopes are ideal. However, due to the nature of the intersecting currents that form this phenomenon, we advise visitors to observe from a safe distance and refrain from approaching the water to ensure personal safety.
